Authority of The Lords Prayer

I had the privilege of hearing Rev. Kirk Dubois speak on the topic of ‘The believers authority’ a topic I have also taught on for many years. When he shared his insight into the Lords Prayer, I was so moved, that I immediately bought his book and am devouring it. Great book. Here is what he shared:

Matthew 6:9-13

New International Version

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b

In the original Greek language in which the following verses were written, every verb in this prayer is in “the imperative command, present tense”. So really, this is how this prayer should be translated;

Matt 6;9-13

Our Father, Who is in the heavens. Your Name must at once be made holy

Your Kingdom must now come, Your will must be done right now, as in Heaven also on Earth

You must now give us, today, the things necessary for our existence

You must right now forgive our sins for us, in the same manner we have completed forgiving everyone of everything, big and little, against us.

And do not lead us into temptation, but you must now rescue us from the evil one.[1]

This must change the way we pray, and deliver us from vain, repetitive, unexpectant prayers…
