When Kings must Bow!

Extra-Biblical Account of Jesus

The Roman Standards Bow Before Jesus — With Pilate’s Wife Entering the Chamber

A complete, ministry‑ready retelling from the Gospel of Nicodemus

John 21:25
And there are also many other things which Jesus did. If they should be all recorded one by one [in detail], I suppose that even the world itself could not contain (have room for) the books that would be written.

  1. Jesus Enters the Judgment Hall

John 18: 28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

Tradition:

Jesus is brought into Pilate’s judgment hall.

The Roman soldiers stand in formation, each holding a military standard.

As Jesus steps inside:

Every standard bows down toward Him.

The soldiers are stunned.

The Jewish leaders are enraged.

Pilate is visibly shaken.

The soldiers insist:

“We did not cause them to bow. They bowed of themselves.”

2. The Jewish Leaders Demand a Test

The elders accuse the soldiers of trickery and demand a controlled test:

•             Take Jesus outside

•             Command the soldiers to hold the standards upright

•             Bring Jesus back in

•             Prevent the standards from bowing

Pilate agrees.

3. Jesus Is Taken Out

Jesus is escorted outside.

The soldiers reset their stance. (recognizing that if the standards bow again, they may well be put to death)

The Jewish leaders command:

“Hold the standards upright. Do not let them bow.”

The soldiers swear they will resist with all their strength.

4. Jesus Is Brought Back In — The Standards Bow Again

Jesus crosses the threshold.

The soldiers brace themselves…

They grip the standards tightly…

They resist with all their might…

But the moment Jesus enters:

The standards bow again — even lower than before.

The soldiers cry out:

This is the moment the hall erupts in confusion.

⭐ 5. Pilate’s Wife Enters the Chamber

Matthew 27:19

While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”

Right in the middle of this supernatural disturbance, Pilate’s wife bursts into the judgment hall.

The Gospel of Nicodemus says she was agitated, trembling, and visibly distressed.

She cries out to Pilate:

Her entrance interrupts the chaos:

•             The standards are bowing

•             The soldiers are panicking

•             The Jewish leaders are shouting

•             Pilate is overwhelmed

•             And now his wife arrives with a prophetic warning

This moment dramatically heightens the tension.

6. Pilate Is Deeply Disturbed

Pilate is now confronted with:

•             A public miracle (the bowing standards)

•             A supernatural dream given to his wife

•             His own growing conviction that Jesus is innocent

•             The political pressure of the Jewish leaders

The Gospel of Nicodemus portrays Pilate as torn, caught between divine signs and human threats.

7. Why Pilate’s Wife Matters in This Scene

A. Her timing is supernatural

She enters exactly as the standards bow a second time — reinforcing the divine nature of the moment.

B. Her dream confirms Jesus’ innocence

She becomes an unexpected prophetic voice.

C. Her warning intensifies Pilate’s internal conflict

He now has:

•             Miracles

•             Testimony

•             Signs

•             A prophetic dream

•             His own conscience

All pointing in one direction.

D. It shows God’s mercy even toward Pilate

He is given multiple chances to recognize Jesus. Yet, Pilate denies Jesus innocence, and is very probably in eternal hell at this time.

Imagine the moment of his death, some years later;

2 Corinthians 5:8

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

The day comes for Pilate that we all shall face, He closes his eyes, and breathes his last breath here in this life.

Hebrews 9:27

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

At that moment, his spirit leaves his body and appears before JESUS, in all His heavenly glory.  Not the bleeding beaten Lamb of God, rather the King of the Universe, seated at the right hand of power. God the Son.

Imagine the conversation:

“Hello Pilate, remember me?”

Pilate

“Lord I was scared, and terrified of Rome and the Jews”

Jesus:

“Depart from me, for I never knew you.

Matthew 25:41

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Clearly, Pilate feared the wrong thing, and it cost him everything. Eternity is real, we must CHOOSE who we will serve.

Lets Pray: Father God Almighty. You see the things pressuring me to serve them and I am afraid. God please give me courage to fully serve JESUS and choose Him, now and in every decision I make. I receive you JESUS Now, and bow before your Lordship, Kingship and authority. Lead me, guide me, and make me the person you have called me to be.
