Earrings? On Men?
Should a guy get his ear pierced and wear an earring or stud in his ear?
What does the Bible say?
Deut 15:15 And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.
16 And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee;
17 Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
Ex 21:2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
3 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
4 If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.
5 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:
Ex 21:6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him forever.
I have been thinking about this verse, and some people say that a man should never wear an earring, ever.
They say, that Jesus comes to set us free, to grant us our freedom back, and that Biblically, a man wearing an earring, is a sign of slavery.
Yet, I spoke with a combat veteran one day, who wore an earring. This guy was a man’s man, so I asked him about it?
He said, that he wore it, as a sign of submission to his master: Jesus. That Jesus had given him life, a wife, and children, and he wore his earring as worship, to say to God, ‘I would rather serve in Your house, for You have been only good to me. I love my master, my wife, and my children, I do not want to leave…’
Well, the Scripture says that: Ro 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Seems this brother believed something, that sure sounds like faith to me….
Who am I to judge another man’s heart?
Can we not sweat the small stuff?
As Thomas Aquinas said:
‘In essentials, unity
In non-essentials liberty
In all things, charity’
I don’t wear an earring, nor have I ever gotten a tattoo, but does that make me more holy than another?
Never!
The only holiness anyone of us will ever see is through the shed blood of Jesus.
Sure, we walk out our faith, and seek purity, holiness, truth, and honorable conduct, but these come from the heart, changed by His grace, love, and truth: NOT from outward adornment, or lack thereof.
Seen too many folks with earrings and tattoos judged, condemned, and made to feel uncomfortable and disenfranchised with houses of worship, by legalistic Christians.
Not me. I am going to love, accept, and serve with anyone on fire for Jesus, and will be a fruit inspector, not judging by outward appearances.
He who is forgiven much, loves much.
Where sin abounds, grace does much more abound.
May we all remain in the place of abounding grace….

‘Father, help me to love people that do not look, dress, talk, or live like me. Help me to attempt to humbly understand them, and to be gentle with them, as You teach us together, how to grow in You. I ask this, in Your name Lord Jesus, Amen’
